Two route types dominate Samui catamaran charters: the Ang Thong Marine Park loop and the private island anchorage near Samui's coast.
Ang Thong is a national park comprising 42 islands. The route includes a stop at Mae Koh Island for the inland lagoon viewpoint, snorkeling off Wao Island, and lunch at anchor near Koh Phaluai. The park charges a 300 baht per person entry fee, which we build into the charter cost. Weather permitting, this is a full-day commitment: depart Samui at 08:00, return by 16:00. The marine park authority closes access during monsoon conditions, typically November through December.
The alternative is a shorter route along Samui's south or east coast, anchoring off small private islands or quiet bays. Koh Taen and Koh Matsum are the most reliable anchorage points. These routes work well for half-day charters or when weather rules out the open crossing to Ang Thong. Transit time is 30 to 40 minutes each way. You can structure the day around snorkeling, paddleboarding, beach time, or simply eating and drinking at anchor.
A typical full-day structure: embarkation at a pier near Bophut or Maenam, transit to destination, two to three hours at anchor with water activities, lunch service, second stop for swimming or snorkeling, return transit. Half-day charters compress this into four hours total, usually skipping lunch in favor of a catered snack spread.
F&B logistics
Food and beverage service on a catamaran is limited by galley size, refrigeration capacity, and the fact that crew are managing both navigation and hospitality. Most operators offer three F&B tiers: basic Thai buffet, upgraded seafood buffet, or catered plated service from an external provider.
Basic Thai buffet includes fried rice, papaya salad, grilled chicken or fish, fruit. Adequate but not memorable. Upgraded seafood buffet adds grilled prawns, squid, and a wider selection of salads and side dishes. Catered plated service means an external caterer prepares individual plates that the boat crew serves. This costs more and requires more advance notice, but it elevates the meal into something that feels like a restaurant experience rather than a picnic.
Alcohol is typically sold on consumption rather than open bar. Beer and wine are straightforward. Cocktails require premixing or simplification because boats do not have bartender-level setups. If the client wants branded spirits or specific wine labels, we arrange purchase and load them before departure. The operator charges a corkage or service fee.
Dietary restrictions are manageable with advance notice. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and halal options are all feasible. The limiting factor is crew preparation time, not ingredient availability.
What private charter actually means
Private charter means the boat is yours and the itinerary is negotiable, but it does not mean unlimited customization. The vessel is still subject to marine regulations, weather constraints, and the captain's authority. If the captain judges conditions unsafe, the route changes or the charter cancels. This happens most often with Ang Thong trips during shoulder season months when swells exceed one meter.
Departure time is flexible within daylight hours. Most charters depart between 08:00 and 10:00 to maximize usable time at the destination. Later departures compress the schedule and risk running into afternoon wind.
The crew typically includes a captain, deckhand, and one or two service staff depending on group size. Larger charters may include a dedicated host or coordinator. Crew speak working English. If the group requires language support beyond English and Thai, we arrange a bilingual coordinator as an add-on.
Some groups request onboard programming: team-building exercises, presentations, award ceremonies. This is possible but requires advance planning. Deck space is limited and audio equipment must be weatherproofed. Most groups use the boat as a social platform rather than a meeting venue.
Weather risk and contingency
Weather is the primary operational risk. Samui's dry season runs February through September, with April and May offering the most consistent conditions. October through January sees variable weather, with November and December being the least reliable months. During monsoon conditions, the marine park closes and even coastal routes become uncomfortable.
Operators require 48 to 72 hours notice for cancellation without penalty if weather deteriorates. Within that window, cancellation or postponement incurs a fee, typically 50 percent of the charter cost. We recommend building a weather contingency day into the program schedule if the charter is mission-critical.
Seasickness affects roughly 10 to 15 percent of passengers on open crossings to Ang Thong, even in calm conditions. Power catamarans reduce motion compared to monohulls, but they do not eliminate it. We advise clients to bring medication and to avoid scheduling critical program elements immediately after disembarkation.
